Conference 'Piron Brigade'
First Belgian-Luxembourg military cooperation

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Brussels (3 September 1944) and the city of Luxembourg (10 September 1944), the Embassy of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, in collaboration with the Military Museum, is organising a conference on the participation of the Piron Brigade in the liberation of Belgium.
A symbol of resilience and brotherhood in arms between Belgium and Luxembourg, the Piron Brigade represents a crucial chapter in our common history. In 1940, the Belgian government in exile in London established an infantry brigade. It transferred it to the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Jean-Baptiste Piron in 1942. In 1944, Luxembourg soldiers joined the Piron Brigade, making it the first Belgian-Luxembourg military cooperation. The Belgian-Luxembourg Brigade took part in the Battle of Normandy and then in the liberation of numerous cities, including Brussels on 3 September 1944.
Practical information
Through the conference taking place on 17 September at 18h30 at the Royal Military Museum, Cinquantenaire Parc 3 in Brussels , we want to pay tribute to the men and women who contributed to the liberation of our countries.
Speakers:
- Professor Francis Balace (University of Liège) will trace the history of Piron Brigade from the Normandy landings onwards.
- Historian Vincent Artuso (University of Luxembourg) will focus on the Luxembourg battery of the Piron Brigade.
- Finally, Colonel Jacques Luyckx will present the career of his father, Marcel Luyckx, second lieutenant of the Piron Brigade.
