FRANCE IN THE 19th CENTURY

French military grandeur

To reach the spectacular view over Brussels  you walk under the Arcade brick vaulted ceiling. The items on display here are just as impressive as our capital’s skyline you can enjoy one floor up.

The Arcade Gallery houses an impressive collection of edged weapons, helmets and other headgear, honorary insignias, firearms and even musical instruments, immersing you in France’s military grandeur at the end of the 18th century and throughout the 19th century.

The objects in this room mainly date from the French First Empire (1804-1815), the French Restoration (1815-1830) and the French Second Empire (1852-1870).

Most of them were gathered at the beginning of the 20th century by two passionate collectors: banker Georges Titeca and Count Robert de Ribaucourt. Their ensembles have been on display in this impressive gallery in the Military Museum since they were donated.
